Human Design has its own vocabulary, and the jargon can be the biggest barrier when you're starting out. This glossary defines every key term in plain language, so you can move through your chart — and the rest of this knowledge base — without getting stuck on a word.
Terms are grouped roughly by theme below, then listed A–Z in the full glossary. Bold links take you to the full explanation of that concept. If you only learn five terms first, learn these: type, strategy, authority, center, and not-self.
The five things to know first#
| Term | One-line meaning |
|---|---|
| Type | Your energy "category" — Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, or Reflector. |
| Strategy | The simplest reliable way for your type to make decisions and engage life. |
| Authority | Your personal inner mechanism for knowing a decision is right for you. |
| Center | One of the nine shapes in the bodygraph; defined (colored) or undefined (white). |
| Not-self | The conditioned, off-course version of you — flagged by a specific emotional theme. |
A–Z glossary#
A#
Activation — A planet landing in a specific gate and line in your chart, "switching it on." Each chart has 26 activations: 13 from your moment of birth (your conscious, black, Personality side) and 13 from roughly three months before birth (your unconscious, red, Design side).
Ajna — The center of mental awareness, conceptualization, and how you process and articulate ideas. When defined, you have a fixed way of thinking; when open, your mind is flexible but can feel pressure to be certain. See the centers.
Authority — Your reliable inner decision-making mechanism. While type gives you a broad strategy, your authority tells you how to know a specific choice is correct — for example by waiting out an emotional wave, trusting a splenic hunch, or talking it through. See Strategy and Authority.
Aura — The energy field that surrounds you and constantly interacts with everyone nearby. Each type has a distinct aura: the Manifestor's is closed and repelling, the Generator's open and enveloping, the Projector's focused and absorbing, and the Reflector's resistant and sampling. Your aura, not your behavior, is what others actually respond to.
B#
Base — The finest layer of detail in an activation, below color and tone. Part of the deeper Variable system; most beginners can safely ignore it at first.
Bodygraph — The central diagram of Human Design: nine centers connected by 36 channels, made up of 64 gates. Your unique chart colors in whichever centers, channels, and gates your planets activate. It blends the I Ching, astrology, the chakra system, and the Kabbalah.
C#
Center — One of the nine geometric shapes in the bodygraph (Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen, Root). Each governs a theme of life energy. A center is defined if it's colored in — a consistent, reliable energy you carry — or undefined/open if it's white. See the nine centers.
Channel — A line connecting two centers in the bodygraph, formed by two gates (one at each end). When both gates are activated, the channel is complete and "defines" the centers it joins. Channels are the wiring that determines your type and definition. There are 36 in total.
Color — A sub-layer of an activation (below line, above tone) used in the advanced Variable / Primary Health System work. Not needed for understanding your basic chart.
Conditioning — The lifelong process of being shaped by other people's energy, especially through your open centers, where you take in and amplify what isn't reliably yours. Living your strategy and authority is the antidote — it helps you tell your truth from absorbed conditioning. Closely tied to the not-self.
Conscious / Personality — The black side of your chart, calculated from your exact birth moment. It represents what you're aware of and identify with — "the driver in the car." Contrast with Design/unconscious.
Cross (Incarnation Cross) — The combination of your Sun and Earth gates in both the conscious and unconscious charts (four gates total), describing your overarching life purpose or theme. There are 192 incarnation crosses, shaped by your profile.
D#
Definition — How the defined centers in your chart connect to one another. Single definition means all defined centers form one connected group; split definition means two or more separate groups (often with a sense of seeking what bridges them). Types include single, split, triple-split, quadruple-split, and no definition (the Reflector).
Defined — A center, channel, or gate that is colored in and consistently "on" in your chart. Defined energy is fixed and reliable — it's who you consistently are, and it radiates out to influence others. See Defined vs. Open Centers.
Design / Unconscious — The red side of your chart, calculated from roughly 88 days (about three months) before birth, when the Sun had moved 88° of arc. It represents your body, your unconscious traits, and the things others see in you before you do. Contrast with Personality/conscious.
G#
G center — Also called the Identity or Self center. Governs identity, direction in life, and love. When defined, you have a fixed sense of self and direction; when open, your identity and direction are fluid and people- and place-sensitive. See the G center.
Gate — One of the 64 numbered points in the bodygraph, each corresponding to a hexagram of the I Ching and sitting at one end of a channel. An activated gate is a specific theme or "gift" switched on in you. Two connecting gates complete a channel.
H#
Hanging gate (open gate) — A gate that is activated on its own, with the other half of its channel not activated. It gives you the flavor of that gate while leaving you "looking for" the gate that would complete the channel — which is part of what draws you to certain people (whose chart supplies the missing half).
Head — The top center, the seat of mental pressure and inspiration: the questions, doubts, and ideas that get you thinking. When open, you can feel pressure to answer questions that aren't even yours. See the Head center.
Heart (Ego / Will) — The small motor center governing willpower, self-worth, and material/competitive drive. Defined, you have reliable willpower and can make promises; open, willpower is inconsistent and you needn't prove your worth. See the Heart center.
Hexagram — The six-line I Ching figure that each of the 64 gates is based on. The lines of a hexagram map onto the six lines of a gate and feed your profile.
I#
Incarnation Cross — See Cross.
L#
Line — The second number in a gate activation (as in "Gate 7, Line 1"). Each gate has six lines, drawn from the six lines of its I Ching hexagram, each a finer shade of the gate's theme. Your Sun/Earth lines form your profile. See the six lines.
M#
Manifestor — The type built to initiate and get things moving (~9% of people). Strategy: to inform before acting. Signature: peace; not-self: anger. See Manifestor.
Manifesting Generator — A Generator sub-type that's fast and multi-passionate (~33%). Strategy: respond, then inform. Signature: satisfaction; not-self: frustration. See Manifesting Generator.
Generator — The most common type (~37%), the builders with a defined Sacral engine. Strategy: to respond. Signature: satisfaction; not-self: frustration. See Generator.
Motor — Any of the four centers that generate energy: the Sacral, Heart/Ego, Solar Plexus, and Root. Whether a motor is wired (via a channel) directly to the Throat is what separates Manifestors and Manifesting Generators from other types.
N#
Not-self — The conditioned, off-course version of you: the choices, beliefs, and behaviors you adopt through conditioning in your open centers instead of acting from your true strategy and authority. Each type has a not-self theme — anger, frustration, bitterness, or disappointment — that acts as a warning light telling you you've drifted.
O#
Open / Undefined — A center (or gate/channel) that is not colored in. Open centers have no fixed energy of their own, so they take in, amplify, and reflect the energy around them. They're a major source of conditioning — but also of wisdom, because over time you learn to read others clearly there. (Some teachers distinguish undefined — has at least one hanging gate — from completely open — no activated gates at all.)
P#
Personality — See Conscious.
Planets — The bodies (Sun, Earth, Moon, North & South Node, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) whose positions at your two calculation times produce your 26 activations. The Sun and Earth carry the most weight. See Planets & Activations.
Profile — The combination of your conscious Sun line and unconscious Sun line (e.g. 1/3, 6/2), describing your personality's "costume" and life journey. There are 12 profiles, built from the six lines. See it as how you live out your type and cross.
Projector — The guide type (~20%), gifted at seeing and directing others but without a consistent energy engine. Strategy: wait for the invitation. Signature: success; not-self: bitterness. See Projector.
R#
Rave — Ra Uru Hu's term for the Human Design version of a concept, most often heard in the Rave I'Ching (his reworking of the I Ching with a description of each gate and its six lines) and the Rave Mandala (the wheel showing the 64 gates around the zodiac). "Rave" essentially flags "the Human Design version of."
Reflector — The rarest type (~1%), with no defined centers — a mirror of the community and the lunar cycle. Strategy: wait a lunar cycle (about 28 days) before big decisions. Signature: delight (or surprise); not-self: disappointment. See Reflector.
Root — The bottom center, a pressure motor governing stress, drive, and the adrenaline to get things done. Open, you can rush to clear pressure that isn't yours. See the Root center.
S#
Sacral — The powerhouse motor center that defines the Generator types. It's a renewable engine of life-force and the source of the gut "uh-huh / unh-unh" response. Whether the Sacral is defined is the single biggest divide between energy and non-energy types. See the Sacral center.
Signature — The feeling you get when you're living in alignment with your strategy: peace (Manifestor), satisfaction (Generators), success (Projector), or delight (Reflector). The positive counterpart to the not-self theme.
Solar Plexus (Emotional center) — A motor center governing emotions, feelings, and moods, which move in a wave. When defined, it's your authority: there's no truth in the now — you wait out the wave for clarity. Open, you absorb and amplify others' emotions. See the Solar Plexus center.
Spleen — The center of intuition, instinct, the immune system, and in-the-moment survival awareness. Splenic authority speaks once, quietly, in the present. Open, you may cling to what isn't healthy out of fear of letting go. See the Spleen center.
Strategy — The simplest, most reliable way for your type to engage life with less resistance — respond, inform, wait for the invitation, or wait a lunar cycle. Strategy is the type-level "how"; authority is the personal, in-the-moment "how." See Strategy by Type.
T#
Throat — The center of communication, expression, and manifestation — the bodygraph's "action" hub. A motor wired to the Throat is what makes a Manifestor or Manifesting Generator. Open, you may feel pressure to speak or grab attention. See the Throat center.
Tone — A sub-layer of an activation beneath color, part of the advanced Variable system that informs the Primary Health System (PHS). Not needed for a basic understanding of your chart.
Type — The most fundamental piece of your design: which of the five energy categories you are — Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, or Reflector — determined by which centers and channels are defined. Type sets your aura, strategy, signature, and not-self. See the five types.
U#
Unconscious — See Design.
Undefined — See Open / Undefined.
V#
Variable — The advanced layer encoded in the arrows (▲▼) shown beside your profile numbers in many charts, built from the color, tone, and base of four key activations. It informs the Primary Health System (PHS) — guidance on how you best eat, sleep, focus, and place yourself in your environment. A deeper topic to explore once the basics click. See Variable and the PHS.
How the core terms fit together#
If you read the chart top-down, the terms nest neatly:
- Your planets create activations, which switch on gates and lines.
- Two gates complete a channel, which defines the centers it connects.
- Which centers and channels are defined gives you your type and definition.
- Type sets your aura, strategy, signature, and not-self; your defined awareness center sets your authority.
- Your Sun/Earth lines form your profile, and your Sun/Earth gates form your incarnation cross.
