The Chakra System and the 9 Centers

If you already know your chakras, you have a head start on Human Design — but only a partial one. The nine centers in a Human Design bodygraph are not the same as the seven chakras. They grew out of them. Human Design teaches that the seven-chakra system describes an older form of human being, and that humanity has since mutated into a nine-centered being — a shift Ra Uru Hu called the move from Homo sapiens to Homo sapiens in transitus.

The seven traditional chakras#

The chakra system comes from the Hindu-Brahmin tantric tradition: seven spinning energy hubs aligned along the spine, each governing a layer of human experience. In their classic form they are:

This is a seven-centered model of a human being: a single vertical channel of energy from base to crown.

Why Human Design uses nine centers#

Human Design keeps the chakras' spirit but redraws the map. Instead of seven points on a line, it uses nine geometric centers wired together by 36 channels — the shape you see in a bodygraph.

The nine centers are the Head, Ajna, Throat, G/Identity, Heart/Ego, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen, and Root. Browse them all on the centers overview.

Ra Uru Hu, who founded Human Design in 1987, taught that this is more than a relabelling. He described an actual mutation in the human form that he dated to 1781 — the year the planet Uranus was discovered. According to his account, before that point humans operated as a seven-centered being; afterwards a new, nine-centered design began emerging, reorganising how human awareness and cognition work. Whether you take that story literally or as a teaching myth, the practical upshot is the same: Human Design works with nine centers, not seven.

The 7-to-9 mutation: what split and what moved#

The jump from seven to nine isn't just "add two boxes." Several chakras were split in two, and the energies of others were redistributed. Here is the core of the remapping.

The chakras that map cleanly across#

Three centers carry over with little change:

• The Crown chakra becomes the Head center — pressure, inspiration, mental questions.
• The Third Eye / Ajna chakra becomes the Ajna center — how you think, conceptualise, and hold opinions.
• The Throat chakra becomes the Throat center — communication and manifestation. (In Human Design the Throat does heavier lifting: it's the one place energy turns into speech and action.)

The Heart chakra splits into two centers#

The single Heart chakra (love, identity, will) divides into two distinct centers:

• The G/Identity center — your sense of self, love, direction, and life path.
• The Heart/Ego/Will center — willpower, drive, self-worth, and the energy behind promises and deals.

Human Design treats who you are (G) and what you have the will to do (Heart) as two separate mechanics, even though older systems folded both into the heart.

The Solar Plexus chakra splits and redistributes#

This is where the biggest reorganisation happens. The classic Solar Plexus chakra — power, emotion, gut instinct — fans out into the lower three centers:

• The Solar Plexus center — your emotional awareness, moving in a wave of highs and lows over time.
• The Spleen center — your oldest, in-the-moment awareness: intuition, instinct, health, and survival alertness.
• A share of that life-force and survival energy also feeds the Sacral and Root centers below.

In other words, what one chakra used to hold — feeling, instinct, and gut power — Human Design separates into a slow emotional wave (Solar Plexus) and a fast instinctive flash (Spleen), two awareness systems that speak in completely different time signatures.

The lower chakras, remapped#

• The Sacral chakra becomes the Sacral center — the renewable engine of life-force and work that defines whether you're an energy type. Whether your Sacral is defined is the single most important split in the whole Type system.
• The Root chakra becomes the Root center — pressure, drive, stress, and the adrenaline to get things moving. Some of the old root's survival charge is shared with the Spleen.

Defined vs. open: a key difference from chakra work#

In a lot of chakra practice the goal is to open, balance, or unblock every center. Human Design works differently. Your centers are simply defined vs. open (coloured in — consistent, reliable energy) or open / undefined (white — taking in and amplifying the world around you), fixed for life by your birth chart.

Neither is better. An open center isn't a blocked chakra to fix; it's where you're designed to be wise, flexible, and sampling. A defined center is where you radiate a steady, dependable quality.
