The Magnetic Monopole and the Fractal
On this page
In Human Design's own account, the Magnetic Monopole is a single point in the G Center, seated at Gate 2, that attracts and never repels. Ra Uru Hu called it the driver. It does two things in his teaching: it holds your Personality and your Design together as one being, and it pulls that being along a path the system calls your geometry, drawing the people, places and events that belong on it toward you.
A word about the name. Physics uses "magnetic monopole" for a hypothetical particle with a single pole, which no experiment has found. Human Design borrows the term as a picture, not as a measurement. This page reports the teaching as the tradition tells it, and nothing on it is computed from your birth data: the Monopole is identical in every chart ever drawn.
Three parts of one being#
The tradition pictures you as three things held together, not one. Two of them are the crystals of consciousness that the substructure already describes, and the third is the Monopole.
- The Personality Crystal sits in the Head center, imprinted at the moment of your birth. It is the conscious self, the part you experience as "you", drawn in black on your chart.
- The Design Crystal sits in the Ajna, imprinted 88° of the Sun's travel before your birth, which works out at roughly three months. It is the unconscious, body-based self, drawn in red. How a chart is calculated covers both moments, and the planets page shows the two sides side by side.
- The Monopole sits in the G, between them, and is why they are experienced as one person rather than two.
Ra explained this with a car. The Design is the vehicle: the body, its chemistry, the way it takes things in. The Personality is the passenger: aware, opinionated, convinced it is steering. The Monopole is the driver, and the passenger is not it.
What the Monopole does#
It holds the two crystals together. In Ra's telling this is what produces the felt sense of being one separate self, with one body and one mind, moving through a world of other separate selves. The tradition calls that the illusion of separateness: not a mistake to correct, but the ordinary experience of being alive in a form.
It pulls you along your geometry. The G Center governs identity, love and direction, and direction is the Monopole's half of that. In the system's account you do not steer your life; you are moved through it, and what reaches you reaches you by attraction. This is the mechanism behind the G Center's not-self, the exhausting search for a direction you feel you ought to be manufacturing. Strategy and Authority are how you stop overriding the pull with the mind, and they are the only practical instruction the Monopole comes with.
Ra also identified the Monopole's pull with love — not affection, but the attracting force itself. That is his phrasing, and teachers since have varied in how literally they take it. It is why the G Center holds identity, love and direction as one theme rather than three.
The fractal#
The fractal is the same teaching seen from outside. The tradition holds that every crystal came from a common source and belongs to a fractal line, that your Monopole moves you along yours, and that the people who keep turning up in a life — the ones you meet without arranging it — are "on your fractal".
Two things follow for a reader. Chasing a particular person or place tends not to work, because the mechanism is attraction rather than pursuit. And where you physically are matters a great deal, which is why Environment is a Human Design topic at all, and why geography is the strongest lever an open G Center has.
This is also where the system is at its least testable, and it is worth saying so plainly: the fractal explains a pattern after the fact and predicts nothing you could check in advance. Beyond it lies Rave Cosmology — the crystal bundles, the Design bundle in the Earth, past lives, the sixteen aspects, the sixty-six sides. Those are named here so the words are not a surprise when you meet them; they are a separate body of teaching this page does not explain.
What this means for your chart#
Nothing on your bodygraph draws the Monopole, and no calculator prints it, ours included. There is no value to look up, because there is one Monopole story and it is the same for everybody.
What differs from chart to chart is the ground it works on. Whether your G Center is defined or open decides whether your sense of direction is consistent or absorbed from the people and places around you. And an activated Gate 2 is read in the tradition as the seat itself being lit: a wordless sense of being guided, which is a flavour rather than an advantage.
Where the tradition's own wording varies#
Ra placed the Monopole differently on different occasions — in the G Center, at Gate 2, and "behind the sternum". These pages settle on the G Center with its seat at Gate 2, which is how the rest of the material reads. And whether the Monopole is love or merely behaves like it is his phrasing, not a mechanic you can check against a chart. If you find a teacher saying it another way, that is why.
Where to study it#
The primary material is Ra's own. The Magnetic Monopole lectures cover the point itself and the illusion of separateness; The History of Geometry: Fractals, Nodes and Bases sets out the fractal at length and reaches down into Base as well. Both are paid recordings from Jovian Archive and the International Human Design School.
