Base Theory: Facets and Frequencies

Base is the last layer of the substructure and the one the tradition treats as the beginning. Where Color and Tone describe what happens to information inside you, Base describes the way in: which facet of the crystal the neutrino stream enters through. Ra Uru Hu taught it as a course of its own, Advanced Base Theory, and this page is the frame he put around it.

Two things to set expectations. Base is the deepest layer of the deepest layer of Human Design, so treat it as an interesting picture rather than an instruction. And the public canon on it is thin: the five Bases are numbered, not named, and this page invents no keynotes for them.

Five facets#

The substructure page describes two crystals of consciousness: the Personality Crystal, imprinted at birth, and the Design Crystal, imprinted 88° of the Sun's travel earlier. Base theory adds one detail to that picture. Each crystal has five facets, and the neutrino stream the tradition says carries information to you enters through exactly one of them. Which facet that is, is your Base.

Five is the count that breaks the pattern. Gates divide into six lines, lines into six colors, colors into six tones — the I Ching's six-fold structure all the way down. Base does not follow it, because in the tradition's account Base is not a subdivision of meaning at all; it is a property of the crystal itself, and the crystal has five faces.

The tradition also holds that Base stays with you: constant through a life, and for the Personality Crystal constant across incarnations too. The first half is a fact about your chart — your Base does not shift with mood, age or conditioning. The second half is a belief the system asks you to take on its own terms, and this page reports it as that.

Entry, inner, exit: the frequency chain#

Base is the first link in a chain that ends in the four arrows on your bodygraph. The tradition names the three layers by what the neutrino stream is doing at each one.

What leaves the crystal is what the Magnetic Monopole steers by, in the tradition's account. That is where the chain ends: entry, through the facet; inner, in the spiral that sets your Cognition; exit, as the frequency your life is drawn along.

The chain also retells Transference and Distraction, the conditioned substitutes the arrow pages describe. Put in frequencies: conditioning changes the exit frequency, so the information the inner frequency was carrying does not arrive intact. The definitions themselves stay on Motivation and Perspective, which is where to go for what yours says.

What Base is said to do#

Ra's theme for Base is orientation and position: not what you perceive or how you digest it, but how you are placed in relation to other people and to the world. It is the most abstract thing in the system, and he treated it as the layer everything else is built on rather than a detail bolted to the bottom.

Beyond that, be careful what you accept. The five Bases carry no keynote names in the public sources. They are simply Base 1 through Base 5. Ra's ten-hour course goes into the nature of each and has never been summarised into a public table; the lists that circulate online are students' notes on a course most of the people quoting them have not taken. Your Base number is real data, and any page that tells you what Base 3 "means" is going further than the material supports.

Why Base needs the minute#

Base is the reason birth time matters so much at this depth, and the arithmetic makes it concrete. One Base spans about 0.0052° of the zodiac, one 1,080th of a gate.

• The Sun moves about 0.99° a day, so on average a Sun placement moves into the next Base every 7.6 minutes.
• The Moon moves about 13° a day, so its Base changes about every 34 seconds.
• The other planets fall on either side: Mercury, Venus and Mars change Base within minutes as well, while Jupiter and the planets beyond it hold a Base for hours or more.

Those figures are averages, not guarantees. A placement that sits near the edge of its Base can tip into the next one with an error of seconds, and one in the middle survives a few minutes either way; the app's birth-time window works this out for your own chart instead of quoting an average. The Nodes drift backwards about 0.053° a day on average, which would put a Base at a couple of hours, but the true node your chart uses speeds up, slows down and reverses through the month, so no single figure holds for them.

This is why the four Variable arrows, read from the Sun, the Earth and the Nodes, need a recorded minute and not a remembered hour, and why a Base on the Moon is a coin toss at any precision a birth certificate offers. If your time is a guess, the whole substructure is a guess with it.

Where Base sits in the app#

On gethumandesign.com Base shows in two places, both for Pro members.

• The Planets tab. The Show Color · Tone · Base switch above the activation table turns the plain notation into the full one, so each of the 26 activations reads as 36.6.2.4.1 — gate, line, color, tone, base. It is off by default: that density is right for someone who came looking for Variable and wrong for everybody else.
• The Advanced tab. Each of the four arrows carries its three numbers beneath its name, which is the set Variable is built from, and the zoom figure below them follows your own Sun down to its Base.

Both are hidden when a birth time is uncertain, for the reason above: at this resolution an approximate time produces numbers that look exact and are not.
