The 36 Channels of Human Design

The channels are the wiring of your bodygraph. There are 36 of them, and each one is a fixed life-force pathway that runs between two of the nine centers. When a channel is active in your chart, it colors in both centers it touches and gives you a consistent, reliable energy — a theme that's switched on for your whole life. Your channels are what actually determine your type, your authority, and the specific gifts you carry.

If gates are the individual notes of your design, channels are the chords. They're where Human Design gets specific about who you are and how your energy flows.

What a channel is#

A channel is formed by two gates joined across two centers — one gate sitting at each end. A channel is only complete, and only does its work, when both of those gates are defined (activated) in your chart.

Take the Channel 1-8, Inspiration above as an example. It links Gate 1 in the G center to Gate 8 in the Throat center. When you have both Gate 1 and Gate 8 activated, the channel snaps closed like a circuit, both centers become defined, and you carry a steady theme — here, the energy of a creative role model whose self-expression inspires others.

Three things follow from this:

• Both gates are required. Having only one gate of a pair leaves it as a hanging gate — an open invitation, not a defined channel.
• A channel defines its centers. Every channel connects two centers, and an active channel makes both of them defined. Your pattern of channels is exactly what colors in your bodygraph.
• Channels are consistent. Unlike a single open gate, a defined channel is a fixed, dependable part of your energy — something you can count on and lead with.

How channels shape your chart#

Your channels do a lot of heavy lifting in your design:

What it determines	How channels decide it
Type	Which centers are defined — and whether a motor connects to the Throat — comes entirely from your channels.
Authority	Your inner authority follows the highest defined center in a set order, set by your channels.
Definition	Whether your defined centers form one connected group or several separate ones (split definition) depends on how your channels link up.
Your gifts	Each channel carries a specific keynote — its own gift and shadow — that you live out consistently.

The four circuits#

Every channel belongs to a circuit — a larger current that gives the channel its flavour and purpose. Human Design groups the 36 channels into four circuit families. Learn more on the circuitry overview.

• Individual circuit — the energy of uniqueness, mutation, and empowerment. These channels are about being different, following your own timing, and bringing genuinely new things into the world. They pulse on and off and carry a characteristic melancholy.
• Collective circuit — the energy of sharing with the whole, split into two streams: Logic (patterns, testing, planning for the future) and Abstract/Sensing (experience, memory, making sense of the past).
• Tribal circuit — the energy of community, family, and support, concerned with resources, loyalty, bargains, and caring for the people closest to you.
• Integration — a small, ancient group of channels centred on self-empowerment and survival. These run through the G, Throat, Sacral, and Spleen and are about standing on your own.

Hanging gates#

When you have only one of a channel's two gates, that gate is hanging (sometimes called a "half channel"). It's defined, but it has no partner to complete the circuit, so it stays open-ended — a quiet looking-for.

Hanging gates are a big part of relationship chemistry. If someone else carries the missing gate, their gate can complete your hanging one, switching the whole channel on while you're in their aura. It's a common, noticeable spark — and it's why two people can feel a particular energy together that neither has alone. The same can happen temporarily through a planetary transit.

To have a channel as a permanent, defined part of your own design, though, you need both of its gates activated in your own chart.
