How a Human Design Chart Is Calculated

Your bodygraph — the colourful nine-centre diagram at the heart of Human Design — isn't a personality quiz or a guess. It's calculated from astronomy. Give the system your birth date, exact birth time, and birth place, and it works out where the planets sat in the sky at two specific moments in your life, then translates those positions into the gates, lines, and defined centers that make up your chart.

This page walks you through that pipeline in plain language: from three pieces of birth data, to precise planetary positions, to the two layers — Personality (black) and Design (red) — that give every chart its distinctive double column of numbers. Light on math, accurate on the mechanics.

The three inputs: date, time, and place#

Everything starts with your birth data, and all three pieces matter:

• Date sets the broad sky — which gates the slow-moving planets occupy.
• Time is the precision dial. The Moon moves through the zodiac fast, and your Ascendant-like framing shifts minute by minute, so even a 15-minute difference can change your line, and sometimes your Profile, type, or Authority. This is why an exact birth time matters so much.
• Place gives the latitude and longitude needed to convert your local clock time to universal time (UTC), correcting for time zone and historical daylight-saving rules.

From these, the engine computes the precise instant of birth as an astronomical timestamp and looks up the sky from there.

From sky positions to gates and lines#

Human Design borrows the ecliptic — the 360° circle the Sun appears to travel against the stars over a year — and wraps the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching evenly around it. This arrangement is called the Rave Mandala.

Because 360° ÷ 64 ≈ 5.625° per gate, every planetary position lands inside one gate. Each gate is then sliced into smaller pieces:

So a position like Sun in Gate 7, Line 1 simply means: at that moment, the Sun's longitude fell in the slice of the wheel assigned to Gate 7, in its first sixth. When a planet activates a gate that completes a channel with another activated gate, the centers at both ends become defined — and that defined-center pattern is what determines your type, Authority, and more.

The two layers: Personality and Design#

Here's what makes a Human Design chart unusual. It's calculated twice, at two different moments, and the two sets of activations are layered together.

Personality — the conscious side (black)#

The Personality layer is calculated for your exact moment of birth. Shown in black on the chart, it represents the conscious you — the mind, the perspective, the way you experience yourself and would describe your own personality. These are the qualities you generally recognise as "me".

Design — the unconscious side (red)#

The Design layer is calculated for a moment roughly three months before you were born, shown in red. This is the unconscious, bodily you — your physical intelligence, inherited traits, and instinctive gifts. People often recognise your Design qualities in you before you do; they operate below conscious awareness, more body than mind.

Most charts therefore show a double column of numbers: red Design on one side, black Personality on the other. A center, gate, or channel can be defined by either layer — or by both at once. Zooming in on a single channel makes the three possibilities clear:

The 88° solar arc: why "three months before"#

The Design moment isn't a round "90 days before birth" estimate. It's pinned to the Sun with precision: it's the instant when the Sun was exactly 88 degrees of solar arc behind its birth position along the ecliptic.

• The Sun travels almost — but not exactly — 1° per day, so 88° of arc works out to roughly 88 to 89 days before birth. The degrees are what's fixed; the number of days drifts slightly.
• Why 88? In Human Design's framework, 88° corresponds to a meaningful stage of gestation — the point in the third trimester when the body-consciousness is understood to "imprint". Symbolically, 88° of arc also echoes the I Ching wheel structure.
• The engine finds this moment by searching for the timestamp where the Sun's longitude is exactly 88° less than at birth, then computes all the planets again for that instant.

That second calculation produces every red Design activation in your chart.

The 13 planetary activations#

Both layers use the same 13 celestial bodies. Calculated once for Personality and once for Design, they give the 26 gate activations you see down the sides of a bodygraph.

The 13 planets are:

• Sun and Earth (Earth is always exactly opposite the Sun) — the most weighted, together they define your Incarnation Cross.
• Moon, North Node, South Node (the lunar nodes, always opposite each other).
• Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.

Each planet contributes one gate-and-line activation per layer. The Sun and Earth carry the heaviest meaning; the faster inner planets add nuance and personal detail.

Putting it all together#

The full pipeline, start to finish:

1. Birth date, time, place → convert local time to UTC using the location.
2. Compute the Personality sky at the exact birth instant → 13 black activations.
3. Find the Design instant — when the Sun was 88° of arc earlier → 13 red activations.
4. Map every planetary longitude to its gate and line on the Rave Mandala.
5. Wherever two activated gates complete a channel, the connected centers light up as defined.
6. The resulting pattern of defined and open centers yields your type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile.
