The History and Origins of Human Design

Human Design is a young system with an unusual origin story. It was brought into the world in 1987 by a man named Ra Uru Hu — born Robert Allan Krakower — who said the entire body of knowledge was transmitted to him over eight days and nights by a presence he called "the Voice." Whether you take that account literally, metaphorically, or skeptically, it's worth knowing exactly what the tradition claims, who Ra was, and which older systems Human Design weaves together.

Who was Ra Uru Hu?#

Ra Uru Hu was the spiritual name adopted by Robert Allan Krakower (1948–2011), a Canadian-born former advertising executive, magazine publisher, and musician. By the mid-1980s he had left his earlier life behind and was living quietly on the Spanish island of Ibiza, with no particular background in mysticism, astrology, or the I Ching.

That ordinary biography matters to the story. Ra always insisted he was not a guru and did not "invent" Human Design as a clever synthesis — he described himself as a messenger who received it and then spent the rest of his life mapping out what he'd been given. After 1987 he devoted roughly 25 years to developing, structuring, and teaching the system until his death in 2011.

The 1987 encounter on Ibiza#

According to the tradition, on the evening of 3 January 1987, Ra had a dramatic mystical experience at his home on Ibiza. He described being "penetrated" by a Voice — an intelligence he later associated with a passing comet — that began dictating a vast, precise body of knowledge about the structure of human beings.

The transmission, as the story goes, lasted eight days and nights. During that time Ra worked almost continuously, transcribing what would become a roughly 400-page foundational text describing:

• the nine energy centers and how they connect,
• the 64 gates and the channels that link them,
• the types, strategies, and authorities,
• and the timing mechanics that bind it all to astronomy.

Human Design presents this not as a belief to be argued but as its account of how the system arrived. We report it the same way: as the founding narrative. What you do with it is up to you — many practitioners find the system useful regardless of how they read the origin story.

The lineages Human Design draws on#

What makes Human Design distinctive is that it fuses several much older traditions into a single mechanical map. The 1987 transmission is said to have integrated four pillars, often called the "four streams":

Stream	What it contributes
The I Ching	The 64 hexagrams become the 64 gates of the bodygraph — the system's core vocabulary.
Astrology	Planetary positions at birth (and ~88 days before) activate specific gates, anchoring the chart in real astronomy.
The Hindu-Brahmin chakra system	The seven traditional chakras are reworked into the nine centers of the bodygraph.
The Kabbalistic Tree of Life	Its branching structure informs how the centers connect through channels.

Modern science also leaves its fingerprints: the bodygraph's grid is sometimes called the neutrino model, reflecting Ra's framing of how subatomic particles "imprint" us at birth. The visual key that overlays the I Ching onto the zodiac wheel is the Rave Mandala, the foundational diagram from which every chart is derived.

If the underlying components feel familiar, that's the point — Human Design's claim is not that the ingredients are new, but that the synthesis is.

How the system was named and spread#

Ra called the system the "Rave" body of knowledge in its early years (you'll still see the term "Rave Mandala" and "Rave I Ching"), before "Human Design" became the common name. To preserve and distribute the material, he founded Jovian Archive, which remains the canonical publisher of his original lectures, texts, and software.

From a single teacher on a Mediterranean island, the system spread through a chain of students and schools:

• Ra taught intensively through the 1990s and 2000s, recording hundreds of hours of lectures that Jovian Archive still curates.
• The International Human Design School (IHDS) was established to train and certify analysts and teachers in the original lineage.
• Offshoots emerged for specific applications — for example BG5 and Career & Business Design, which apply the mechanics to work and organisations.

In the 2010s and 2020s, Human Design moved well beyond the formal schools. Free chart calculators, social media, and a wave of independent practitioners brought it to a far broader audience — which is also why you'll find a wide range of quality and interpretation online today.

Why the origin story matters (and where to be careful)#

You don't have to accept the mystical account to use Human Design. But it helps to understand a few things about its origins:

• It is a young, single-source system. Almost everything traces back to one 1987 transmission and one teacher. There's no centuries-old peer-reviewed tradition behind it — and Human Design doesn't claim otherwise.
• The mechanics are reproducible even if the source is debated. Your chart is computed from real astronomical data, so two calculators using the same engine will agree on your type, profile, and centers, whatever you believe about the Voice.
• Treat it as a lens, not a doctrine. The most grounded way to use Human Design is as a framework for self-reflection and experiment — which is exactly how Ra framed his own Strategy and Authority advice: don't believe it, test it in your own life.
