The Four Systems Behind Human Design

Human Design didn't appear from nowhere. It is a synthesis — a single system stitched together from four older traditions that each describe the human being from a different angle. Western astrology supplies the timing and the planets. The Chinese I Ching supplies the 64 building blocks of character. The Kabbalah's Tree of Life supplies the wiring that connects everything. And the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system supplies the energy centres — reimagined for the modern human.

What makes Human Design interesting is that these four pieces lock together into one coherent map: the bodygraph. Once you see how each tradition slots in, the chart stops looking like a tangle of numbers and triangles and starts reading like a blueprint of how your energy actually works.

Two further influences round out the system: modern quantum physics and genetics (the language of the "neutrino", and the link between the 64 gates and the 64 codons of DNA), and the astronomical calculation that pins your chart to an exact moment. But the four traditions above are the load-bearing pillars.

Astrology: the planets and the wheel#

Human Design starts where astrology starts — with the positions of the planets at your birth. Each planet (Sun, Earth, Moon, the Nodes, Mercury through Pluto) is placed against the 360° wheel of the zodiac, exactly as in a Western birth chart.

Two things make the Human Design use of astrology distinctive:

• Two charts, not one. Your bodygraph is calculated for two moments: the Personality (your exact birth time, the conscious "you") and the Design (about 88 days before birth, the unconscious body-and-genes "you"). That's why your chart has two coloured columns — black for Personality, red for Design.
• The Sun carries the most weight. In Human Design the Sun's position drives roughly 70% of the chart's energetic emphasis — a different focus from mainstream Sun-sign astrology.

The I Ching: the 64 gates#

Here is the elegant join. The 360° zodiac wheel is divided into 64 equal slices, and each slice is assigned one of the 64 hexagrams of the ancient Chinese I Ching — the Book of Changes. In Human Design, those 64 hexagrams become the 64 gates.

So when a planet sits at a certain degree of the zodiac, it lands in one of the 64 gates and "activates" it. Each gate carries a theme — a specific flavour of energy or archetype — drawn from its I Ching hexagram.

• Each hexagram is built from 6 lines, and Human Design keeps all six. Which line a planet falls into is what generates your profile (like 1/3 or 5/1) and adds nuance to every activated gate.
• The 64 gates also map neatly onto the 64 codons of human DNA — one of the genetic resonances Ra Uru Hu pointed to.

The Kabbalah: the Tree of Life and the channels#

The 64 gates don't float in isolation — they connect. That connecting logic comes from the Kabbalah, specifically the Tree of Life, a mystical diagram of nodes (sephirot) joined by pathways.

Human Design borrows this idea of pathways linking energy nodes and turns it into the 36 channels of the bodygraph. Each channel is a line between two centres, and it only completes when both of its gates are activated. A completed channel is what "defines" the centres at each end — and your particular pattern of defined channels is what ultimately determines your type, authority, and definition.

In other words: the Tree of Life is the circuitry. It decides what is wired up in you and what stays open.

The chakra system: evolved into 9 centres#

The nine triangular and square shapes on the bodygraph — the centres — come from the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system. But Human Design makes a bold claim here: the traditional 7 chakras have evolved into 9 centres.

Ra Uru Hu taught that humanity mutated from a seven-centred to a nine-centred being around 1781, splitting and redistributing the old chakra functions. The result is nine centres, each governing a domain of life — communication, intuition, willpower, life-force, emotions, and more.

A centre is defined (coloured in) when a channel running into it is complete, and open (white) when it isn't:

• Defined centres are consistent and reliable — a fixed part of who you are.
• Open centres are where you take in, amplify, and learn from the world — and where conditioning tends to creep in.

How the four fit together#

Read top to bottom, the synthesis is a chain:

1. Astrology measures where the planets were at your two birth moments.
2. The I Ching translates each planetary position into one of the 64 gates (and one of its 6 lines).
3. The Kabbalah's Tree of Life provides the 36 channels that connect those gates.
4. The chakra system gives the 9 centres the channels light up.

Each tradition answers a different question — when, what, how connected, and where in the body.
