Lilith & Chiron: The Astrology Overlay

Human Design builds your bodygraph from thirteen bodies: the Sun, Earth, Moon, the two lunar Nodes and the eight planets from Mercury to Pluto. Black Moon Lilith and Chiron are not among them. They are points from Western astrology, and they have no role in a Human Design chart: they never define a center, never complete a channel, and nothing about your type, authority, profile or incarnation cross depends on them.

They still turn up on some charts, because the arithmetic that turns a planet's position into a gate and line works on any point with a position on the zodiac. Some chart makers and practitioners add them as an extra layer; orthodox Human Design does not. This page explains what each point is, what astrology usually takes it to mean, and how the overlay is handled on gethumandesign.com, where Pro members find it behind a closed Show Lilith & Chiron disclosure on the Advanced tab, for exactly the reason above.

Black Moon Lilith: a point, not a body#

Black Moon Lilith is not an object you could point a telescope at. It is the lunar apogee: the point in the Moon's orbit where the Moon is farthest from Earth, projected onto the zodiac. Because the Moon's orbit is an ellipse with the Earth off-center, that far point sits in a definite direction, and it drifts slowly around the wheel, taking just under nine years to complete a circuit.

Astrology works with two versions. The mean apogee smooths the Moon's orbit into an average ellipse and follows its steady drift. The true (or osculating) apogee tracks the actual orbit at each instant, which wobbles under the Sun's pull and can swing a long way from the mean position, easily enough to land in a different gate. Most astrology software defaults to the mean apogee, and so does this app: the Lilith you see here is the mean Black Moon Lilith, the same placement astro.com gives by default.

Two other Liliths exist in astrology and are easy to confuse with this one: the asteroid 1181 Lilith, a real minor planet, and the "Dark Moon" Lilith, a hypothetical second moon proposed in the nineteenth century. Neither is what a Human Design overlay means by Lilith.

What astrologers usually read into Lilith#

The name comes from the figure of Jewish folklore who refused to submit and left Eden. Astrologers generally take Black Moon Lilith to show:

• the part of you that will not be tamed, domesticated or made agreeable;
• raw instinct, sexuality and appetite, and the shame or exile that has gathered around them;
• where you were pushed out or made wrong, and where a fierce, uncompromising strength grew in response;
• in many modern interpretations, the "dark feminine": power that refuses to be managed.

Where Lilith falls is read as where those themes play out. A Lilith placement is not a judgement on a person's character; it marks a territory.

Chiron: the wounded healer#

Chiron, by contrast, is a real body. It was discovered in 1977, orbits mostly between Saturn and Uranus, and behaves like both a comet and a minor planet, which earned it a class of its own: it was the first of the centaurs. It takes around fifty years to circle the Sun, so its return to its birth position lands around the fiftieth birthday, an event astrologers call the Chiron return.

Its astrological meaning comes from the myth. Chiron was the centaur who taught and healed the heroes of Greek legend, and who carried a wound of his own that would not close. From that story astrologers read Chiron as:

• a wound that does not fully heal, often first felt early in life;
• the place where your own hurt becomes your capacity to help others with theirs;
• a bridge between what is known and structured (Saturn) and what breaks the structure open (Uranus).

Again, the placement marks a theme, not a verdict.

How a point ends up in a gate#

Everything in Human Design starts with a longitude: a position on the 360° circle of the ecliptic. The Rave Mandala lays the 64 gates around that circle, each gate 5.625° wide and split into six lines, and any body with a longitude falls into exactly one gate and line. That is how the thirteen bodies become your 26 activations, and it is the mechanism Human Design shares with astrology.

Lilith and Chiron both have a longitude, so they can be mapped the same way. A chart program can even calculate them twice, at birth and at the Design moment 88° of solar arc earlier, giving each point a conscious (Personality) and an unconscious (Design) placement, just like the planets. The overlay on gethumandesign.com does exactly that: four rows, Chiron and Lilith on each side, each with a gate, a line and the gate's name. Only gate and line are shown. The deeper substructure of color, tone and base is meaningful for the thirteen bodies, but it has no established meaning for astrology points, so the app does not print one.

Two ways of reading the overlay#

Some practitioners read the points through the gate. If Chiron falls in Gate 25, the gate of innocence, the wound is read as a wound to innocence and trust, and the healing as a return to it. If Lilith falls in a Throat gate, the untamed self is read as something that wants to be said. The method borrows the gate's keynote from the I Ching and lets the astrological meaning of the point speak in that gate's language. Readers who bring an astrology background often find this a natural bridge between the two systems.

Orthodox Human Design does not use them. Ra Uru Hu built the system on the thirteen bodies and no others, and the schools that carry his work do not include Lilith, Chiron or any asteroid in a chart. The reasons are structural rather than dismissive. The fixings that give each line its exaltation and detriment are written for those thirteen bodies; nothing in the Rave I'Ching says what Chiron does to a line. The Design calculation, the channels, the centers and everything built on them are complete without these points, so adding them changes nothing mechanical. Whether the overlay tells you something worth knowing is a question about astrology, not about Human Design, and the system itself makes no claim either way.

Reading it on gethumandesign.com#

The overlay is a Pro feature and lives on the Advanced tab of a person's chart, under Astrology overlay. The heading and its caveat sit in the open; the values are behind a closed disclosure, Show Lilith & Chiron, so that nobody meets them by accident and mistakes them for part of the design. The assistant follows the same rule: it will not bring these points up on its own, but it will discuss them if you ask.

If you open the disclosure, a sensible order is:

1. Read the rest of the chart first. Type, strategy, authority, profile and the defined centers are the design; the overlay is a footnote to it.
2. Take each placement as a theme in a gate, not as an instruction. "Chiron in Gate 25" says where a wound might live, not what to do about it.
3. Let nothing here override your strategy and authority. They are how a Human Design chart is meant to be lived, and no astrology point changes that.
