Reflectors and the Lunar Cycle

On this page

For roughly 1% of people, a decision does not come from an emotional wave, a gut response or a quiet inner voice. If you are a Reflector, your process is tied to the sky instead. Every other type has some fixed definition to consult; you have the fastest-moving body on the wheel — the Moon.

That turns out to be a gift rather than a gap. Your openness has a predictable pulse, and it repeats every month as the Moon walks the whole wheel in the same order it walked it last time.

Why the Moon matters most to a Reflector#

A Reflector has no definition at all. All nine centers are open, so no center in your bodygraph supplies a steady signal of its own.

A Reflector's bodygraph: every center open. Nothing here is fixed, so the Moon's pass around the wheel is what supplies the rhythm.

With nothing fixed among your defined and open centers, what is consistent in your life comes from outside. The Moon arrives on schedule and travels the Rave Mandala in exactly the same sequence every month. For you, that is a reliable piece of external clockwork, defining your open centers one after another.

The speed of a lunar transit#

The Moon moves through the wheel faster than anything else in the bodygraph. Where the Sun spends about 5.71 days in a gate, the Moon spends about 10.25 hours, crossing all 64 gates in 27.3 days.

So your temporary definition changes more than twice a day. As it goes, the Moon lands in the partner of one of your hanging gates, closes that channel, and defines an open center for a few hours.

None of that touches your design itself. When a transit defines an open center, it never changes your type, Strategy or Authority — those are fixed at birth. You do not become a Generator for an afternoon; you are a Reflector sampling borrowed energy, which is what Reflectors do.

The two months: sidereal and synodic#

Most talk about "the lunar cycle" quietly mixes up two different measurements. They are not the same length.

Cycle Length What it measures In Human Design
Sidereal month 27.3 days Back to the same gate on the wheel The cycle a Reflector runs on
Synodic month 29.5 days Back to the same phase, new moon to new moon Nothing — it is about visible light

The sidereal month is the Moon's return to the same gate, and that is the clock Human Design uses. The synodic month is the Moon's return to the same phase, which is what you see in the sky.

Because the two differ by about two days, the phases and the gates drift apart month after month. A full moon does not land in the same gate twice running, so a Reflector waiting on a phase is watching a different clock from the one their design runs on.

Waiting the cycle: how Lunar Authority works#

A Reflector's Strategy is to wait a lunar cycle — about 28 days — before a big decision, and their inner guide is Lunar Authority.

The mechanical reason is simple. Over one full pass, the Moon visits every gate on the wheel, so every hanging gate you carry is completed at some point in the month. Across that cycle:

  • You meet the decision from every angle your design can take.
  • You feel how it lands as different centers come on and go quiet again.
  • You watch your own view of it shift, and see which way it keeps settling.

A center defined for ten hours can make something feel urgent, and the urgency leaves with the Moon. Waiting the full cycle is what lets those spikes cancel out, and talking it through with trusted people across the month is how the answer usually surfaces.

Your own monthly calendar#

Because the Moon crosses the 64 gates in the same order every time, the days it completes your particular hanging gates land in the same place in every cycle. Over a few months you can learn your own pattern:

  • The days each month when a particular center is defined.
  • The stretch where a split closes and things feel unusually joined up.
  • The days when nothing connects at all, and you are simply open.

Treat that calendar as a pattern to observe, not a schedule to obey. It says what energy you will be borrowing; it never says what to do. As with transits and your authority generally, the sky describes what is in the air — the full cycle is what decides.

Moon transits for everyone else#

Everyone gets Moon transits. The Moon crosses your hanging gates just as regularly whatever your type; it is simply the shortest transit anyone has. For a design with definition it is the quietest layer of the weather — a passing mood, a few hours of stamina — under fixed mechanics that do not move. For a Reflector, with nothing fixed underneath it, the same cycle is the organising rhythm of a month.
