Transits and Your Authority

On this page

Ra Uru Hu described the transit field, which he called the Program, with a plain phrase: "it's the weather." Weather tells you it is raining. It does not tell you to cancel the meeting. A transit describes what is in the air; what you do about it is decided by your Strategy and your Authority, exactly as every other decision is.

A transit never changes your baseline design. Your type, Strategy, Authority and profile are fixed at birth. A transit can define an open center or close a channel for hours or for months, and it still cannot make you something else. If a transit defines your Sacral center for a week, your Sacral is defined until the planet leaves — you do not become a Generator. The sky is the weather; your bodygraph decides how you meet it.

If your Authority says no, it is not your weather to act in#

A transit never overrules an inner signal. A favourable-sounding transit is not permission, and an uncomfortable one is not a warning to obey. The sky has no opinion about your life.

When a transit activates an open part of your bodygraph, your decision mechanics do not change with it:

  • Emotional Authority. You still wait out the wave. A transit sitting on your Solar Plexus does not license a commitment made at the top or the bottom of it.
  • Splenic Authority. The spleen speaks once, quietly, in the present moment. A transit in your open Root may push you to act from pressure; the quiet signal is still the one to follow.
  • Lunar Authority. If you are a Reflector, you still take the full lunar cycle. A transit defining several of your centers at once does not shorten the wait.

Horoscopes generalise, transits discriminate#

Jovian Archive puts the contrast in one line: "Horoscopes generalize. Transits in Human Design discriminate."

A horoscope sorts eight billion people into twelve buckets and tells each bucket what its day holds. Human Design sorts nobody. The sky is identical for everyone alive, and it still discriminates, because every bodygraph meets that sky with a different pattern of defined and open gates.

One planet moving into one gate lands three different ways:

  • For someone who carries neither that gate nor its partner, it passes as background and touches nothing.
  • For someone carrying the partner hanging gate, it closes the channel and can define a center that is normally open.
  • For someone who already has that whole channel, it turns up the volume on a theme they have carried all their life.

That is what "discriminates" means here: the difference comes from the design, not from a prediction.

Background weather versus direct activation#

Background weather is the sky holding both gates of a channel. Everyone alive stands in it for as long as it lasts, which is precisely why it carries almost no information about you. Treating it as personal guidance is the most common way transits go wrong.

A direct activation is a planet landing in the partner of one of your own hanging gates. It is the only kind that is about your design — and even then it describes how your mechanics respond to conditioning, not what to choose. You can watch it without turning it into an instruction.

Background weather Direct activation
What the sky is doing Holding both gates of a channel Holding the partner of your hanging gate
Who has it Everyone alive, at once Only people with that hanging gate
What it tells you The general atmosphere; nothing personal How your own mechanics behave under conditioning
What it decides Nothing Nothing — your Authority still decides

For the mechanics of that second case, see when a transit defines an open center.

What to do with a transit#

  • Notice it after the fact, as an explanation for something you already felt. This is the honest use, and most of the value is here.
  • Never initiate from it. A transit is not an invitation, a signal or a green light, and nothing in Human Design says to act because the sky moved.
  • Do not plan around it. There are no good days and no bad days, and there is no better transit worth waiting for.
  • Watch how a temporarily defined center behaves in you, and treat it as material for your own deconditioning over the seven-year experiment.
  • If a transit and your Authority disagree, your Authority wins, every time, without discussion.

The sky is the same for everyone. Your design is not. And the decision is still yours to make the way you were built to make it.
