When a Transit Defines an Open Center

On your bodygraph, defined centers are coloured in and open centers stay white. That geometry is fixed at birth. The planets, meanwhile, keep moving through the wheel, and most of what they do is background weather that everyone shares.

A transit becomes personal in one situation only: when a planet enters a gate that partners one of yours. If you carry half of a channel, the moving sky can supply the missing half. For as long as that planet stays in that gate, the channel closes from outside, and a center that is usually open in you is defined.

The mechanics of temporary definition#

A channel needs both of its gates. If you hold only one, you carry a hanging gate and the channel stays half-open. When a transiting planet lands in the partner gate, it closes the circuit from outside. Any open center on that channel is defined for as long as the planet remains, and opens again when it leaves.

Take the Channel of Judgement (18–58). Suppose you carry Gate 58 in your Root center, while your Spleen center is open and you do not have Gate 18. When a planet transits Gate 18, the circuit completes. For as long as it sits there your Spleen is defined, drawing on Root pressure to correct. When the planet departs, the connection breaks and your Spleen is open again.

How long it lasts#

How long an open center stays defined depends entirely on which body closed the channel:

Human Design uses the true node, not the mean node, and the 19-day figure in circulation for the Nodes is per line, not per gate. Put plainly: the difference between a Moon definition and a Pluto definition is the difference between an afternoon and a chapter of your life.

What it may feel like#

An open center is where you take the world in and amplify it. Nothing there is fixed, so what you experience in it keeps changing with the company you keep. Under a transit that defines it, that changes:

• An open Root usually feels pressure arrive in bursts from outside. Defined by a transit, the pressure may feel steady, and oddly your own.
• An open Solar Plexus usually picks up other people's moods. Defined by a transit, a mood may sit there for days and not shift when the room does.

That consistency is borrowed. It is real while it lasts and it goes when the planet does, which is exactly why it is useful material for deconditioning: once you can see that a steadiness came from the sky, it is much harder to mistake passing weather for who you are.

Why it is not a type change#

A transit changes which channels are running for a few hours or a few months. It does not change your type. Type, Strategy, Authority, profile and incarnation cross are all fixed at birth.

The correct sentence is "my Sacral is defined until Thursday". The wrong one is "I am a Generator this week".

If you are a Projector whose Sacral center is defined by a transit, you have not become a Generator. You have not acquired sustainable work energy, and you certainly have not acquired Sacral Authority. The same goes for a defined emotional center: it does not hand you Emotional Authority for the week.

A temporarily defined center is never something to decide from. Commitments made out of borrowed energy still have to be carried after the planet has left. Your own Strategy and Authority remain the only things worth deciding with.

Which ones to look at first#

Rather than tracking thirteen bodies at once, take them in this order:

1. A transit in a bridging gate of a split. If you have a split definition, two parts of your bodygraph normally run separately. A transit landing in a bridging gate joins them into one system, and that is the loudest thing a transit can do to a person.
2. Gates that sit in your open centers. Definition where you normally have none is the biggest departure from your baseline, so it is the easiest thing to notice — and the easiest to misread as yourself.
3. Channels you already carry. These add nothing structurally. They turn up a theme you already know well, and they need the least of your attention.

Taken in that order, transits stay what they are: a way of seeing the conditioning field around you without losing track of your own mechanics.
