Gate 37: Friendship (The Family)

Gate 37 is the Gate of Friendship — based on I Ching hexagram 37, The Family. It sits in the Solar Plexus center, the seat of emotion, and it carries the warm, binding energy that turns a group of people into a family, a tribe, a community. Wherever there is loyalty, shared meals, hugs, handshakes and the unspoken bargains that hold a household together, Gate 37 is at work.

This is the most openly affectionate gate in the bodygraph. Its currency is touch, warmth, and the agreements people make to belong to one another. When you have Gate 37 defined, you bring the glue that keeps a tribe together — and you feel deeply the difference between a community that honours its bonds and one that breaks them.

Where Gate 37 lives: the Solar Plexus#

Gate 37 is one of the gates of the Solar Plexus center, the emotional motor of the chart. That placement matters: Gate 37 doesn't run on cold logic but on feeling and mood. The Solar Plexus moves in a wave, so the warmth of Gate 37 rises and falls — sometimes open-hearted and generous, sometimes withdrawn and guarded.

Because it's an emotional gate, there is no truth in the now for the commitments it makes. The loyalty, promises and "deals" of Gate 37 are sound only when you let your emotional authority settle across the wave before you commit. A bargain struck at the peak of warmth — or the trough of resentment — rarely holds.

Gate 37 is part of the tribal circuitry of Human Design: the circuit concerned with family, support, bargains, and the body's needs. Its themes are belonging, mutual care, and the agreements ("if you do this, I'll do that") that keep a tribe functioning.

The channel it forms#

Gate 37 has a single harmonic partner, Gate 40 (the Gate of Aloneness) in the Heart/Ego center. Together they wire up the Channel 37-40: Community.

This is the channel of the bargain. Gate 37 brings the friendship, the warmth and the willingness to belong; Gate 40 brings the willpower to provide and the need for recovery time alone. The deal is simple and ancient: I support you, and in return I am supported. When the bargain is honoured, the community thrives; when it's broken or unspoken, both sides feel it.

If you have Gate 37 but not Gate 40, you carry the friendship energy and seek out someone whose Gate 40 completes the channel — and vice versa. This makes 37 a famously magnetic gate in relationships.

Gift and shadow#

Like every gate, Gate 37 has a higher and a lower expression.

• The gift — Friendship and equality. At its best, Gate 37 creates genuine community: bonds built on mutual respect, clear and fair agreements, and warmth freely given. It holds families and teams together through affection and trust, and it knows how to make a bargain that serves everyone.
• The shadow — Weakness and broken bargains. In its lower expression, Gate 37 clings to belonging at any cost — keeping the peace by giving too much, staying loyal to deals that no longer serve, or resenting a community that takes without giving back. The shadow shows up as dependency, as bargains made for the wrong reasons, or as warmth that's withheld as punishment.

The path from shadow to gift runs through your emotional wave: wait for clarity before you commit to people and arrangements, and make sure every bargain is one you can keep with an open heart.

Living with Gate 37#

• Honour your wave before you commit. Loyalty and bargains feel most urgent at the emotional peak — let the feeling settle first.
• Make the bargain explicit. The shadow of Gate 37 is the unspoken deal that breeds resentment. Name what you're giving and what you need in return.
• Friendship is your superpower. Warmth, touch and belonging aren't soft extras — they're the energy that keeps the people around you connected.
• Watch for over-giving. Keeping the peace by depleting yourself isn't friendship; it's the shadow. Equal bonds last; lopsided ones break.
