Gate 49: Rejection (Revolution)

Gate 49 is the Gate of Rejection, drawn from I Ching hexagram 49, "Revolution." It sits in the Solar Plexus center and carries the emotional energy to decide who and what belongs — and who or what must be let go. At its best this is the power to reform relationships and societies along clear principles. At its worst it is a knee-jerk "no" that pushes people away before they're truly understood.

This is the gate that draws a line in the sand. It governs marriage and divorce, loyalty and exile, the moment a community accepts a newcomer or casts an old member out. Because it lives in the Solar Plexus, that line is never drawn coolly — it rides an emotional wave, and its timing matters as much as its content.

The core theme: principles, acceptance, and rejection#

Gate 49 holds an instinct for principles — the unwritten terms on which a bond is built. When those principles are honoured, the gate offers warmth, loyalty, and belonging. When they're violated, it has the will to reject: to end the relationship, leave the group, or overturn the established order entirely. That's the "revolution" in the hexagram's name.

The shadow nickname for this gate is the "divorce gate." It's the energy that says, "The terms have changed, and I will not stay." Used wisely, that same energy reforms what's broken. Used reactively, it severs ties that could have been repaired.

How it expresses through the Solar Plexus#

The Solar Plexus is the center of emotions, moods, desire, and — for those who have it defined — emotional authority. It runs on a wave: feelings rise toward hope and fall toward despair, and clarity comes over time, not in the moment.

Gate 49 inherits this completely. The decision to accept or reject is an emotional decision, so it should never be made on the spike of a feeling:

• On a high, Gate 49 is generous and accepting — quick to welcome people in.
• On a low, it is sensitive to slights and quick to reject.
• The truth lives across the whole wave — sleep on it, feel it from several angles, and let the principle (not the mood) make the call.

If your Solar Plexus is defined, emotional authority applies here: there is no truth in the now. The right "yes" or "no" from Gate 49 is the one that still feels right after the wave has passed.

The channel it forms: 19-49 Synthesis#

Gate 49 has one partner, Gate 19, and together they form the Channel of Synthesis (19-49), "a design of being sensitive."

This is a tribal channel. Gate 19 is the sensitivity to need — to food, shelter, intimacy, and resources. Gate 49 decides whether the terms are acceptable enough to commit. Wired together, they make a person finely attuned to the agreements that hold a family, partnership, or community together — and to when those agreements have been broken.

Gift and shadow#

Gift (higher expression)	Revolution / principled reform. The courage to transform relationships and structures so they serve everyone, ending what's truly broken with grace and good timing.
Shadow (lower expression)	Reaction / reactive rejection. A knee-jerk "no," pushing people away on an emotional low, or cutting ties without ever giving the relationship a fair chance.

The work of this gate is timing and clarity: to reject only what genuinely violates your principles, and only after the emotional wave has given you the full picture.

The six lines of Gate 49#

Each line colours the gate's energy of principle, acceptance, and rejection a little differently:

• Line 1 — The need for principles. Rejection or revolution only succeeds when it's grounded in sound principles, not mere feeling.
• Line 2 — The last resort. Slow to reject; will exhaust every other option first, but acts decisively once it's clearly necessary.
• Line 3 — Popular discontent. Sensitive to the shared mood; revolution led not alone but on a wave of collective dissatisfaction.
• Line 4 — Platform. Reform that needs a clear, principled platform and the support of others to take hold.
• Line 5 — Organisation. The practical leadership to organise change and rebuild the structure after the old order falls.
• Line 6 — Attraction. Drawing people toward the new way through magnetism rather than force; reform by appeal, not coercion.

Living with Gate 49#

• Honour your principles, but state them. People can't keep terms they were never told. Name what matters to you before you reject someone for crossing it.
• Reject from the whole wave, not the spike. Give big "no" decisions time — especially relationship-ending ones.
• Reform before you sever. The gift is changing what's broken; cutting ties is the last move, not the first.
• Watch the "divorce gate" reflex. Notice when a "no" is principled and when it's just an emotional low talking.
