Fixing: Exaltation, Detriment & Juxtaposition

Every one of the 26 activations in your chart is a planet sitting in a gate and a line. Most of them are free to express that line's theme across its whole range. A few sit where the tradition says that particular planet brings out the line's most harmonious side, or its most awkward side, or both at once. Those placements are fixed, and the state they are fixed in is called exalted, in detriment, or juxtaposed.

Fixing is one of the finer layers of Human Design. It changes none of the big labels: your type, strategy and authority, profile and incarnation cross stand exactly as they are. What it adds is texture, a note on how a handful of your activations tend to express themselves. Ra Uru Hu set the fixings out in Fixing the Wheel, and every line of the Rave I'Ching carries the same two notes: which planet exalts it, and which planet sits in detriment there.

What fixing means#

"Fixing" here means fixed in place, not in need of repair. Each of the 384 lines (64 gates × 6 lines) describes a theme with two ends: a harmonious expression and a more strained one. An activation that carries no fixing can move between those ends depending on the day, the company and the conditioning. A fixed activation settles at one end.

Detriment is not a fault#

The word invites a misreading, so it is worth saying plainly: a planet in detriment is not a weak spot, a warning, or something you are getting wrong. Exaltation and detriment are two valid expressions of the same energy, the "this" and the "that" of a line. A detriment describes how that energy tends to come out, never whether you should be doing something about it. Many people recognise their detriments faster than their exaltations, because friction is easier to feel than ease. That recognition is the value: it tells you where a line in you naturally expresses itself through contrast, and where you can stop expecting it to look like everyone else's.

How a fixing is worked out#

A fixing is a statement about one planet in one gate's line, and it comes from two places.

The planet's own placement. Every line has a short list of planets that exalt it and planets that sit in detriment there. Eleven of the thirteen bodies appear on those lists: the Sun, Earth, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The North and South Node carry no fixings. If your Design Mars sits in a line that lists Mars as exalted, that activation is exalted; if the line lists Mars in detriment, it is in detriment. Most lines list only a few planets, which is why most activations carry no fixing at all.

A planet in a harmonic gate. A line can also be fixed from next door. The harmonic gates of a gate are the gate itself and the gate at the other end of its channel. Say your Personality Sun is in Gate 1, line 3, and your Design Mars sits in Gate 8, the other half of the 1-8 channel. The chart then also asks what Mars does to line 3 of Gate 1. If Mars is listed as exalted or in detriment there, your Sun's line takes that fixing on as well. The same applies to a second planet sitting in Gate 1 itself.

When the two disagree. The contributions combine. Two exalted contributions are simply exalted; two detriments, simply detriment. When one contribution says exalted and another says detriment, the line is juxtaposed. A single activation on its own can only ever be exalted or in detriment; juxtaposition always takes at least two activations meeting in a gate or across a channel.

Because of the harmonic rule, your fixings depend on the whole chart, not on one placement at a time. Two people with the same Sun position can hold it in different states, because the rest of their planets differ.

Reading fixing in your chart#

On gethumandesign.com fixing shows in two places.

• The Planets tab. In the activation table, a small mark sits beside the gate and line of any placement that carries a state: ▲ exalted, ▼ in detriment, ◆ juxtaposed. A legend under the table spells the marks out, and hovering on a mark gives the same words. An activation with no mark carries no fixing, and that is the common case.
• The Advanced tab. The Fixing block gathers the fixed placements into one list, with the side (Design or Personality), the planet and the gate and line. It lists only the placements that carry a state, typically five to nine of the 26. Printing all 26 with a dash against the silent ones would bury the very thing the block is there to show. From there you can ask the assistant what your fixings mean in practice.

Fixing sits at line level. Beneath the line, each activation has a color, tone and base of its own; fixing says nothing about those.

What it means in practice#

• An exalted placement is somewhere to lean. The line's theme comes out in you easily and well, often without effort or awareness. If your exalted placements cluster around a theme, that theme is probably something people already come to you for.
• A placement in detriment is somewhere to expect friction, and to stop treating the friction as a failure. The line is expressing itself through its harder side; that is the shape it takes in you. Knowing this spares you years of trying to make a line look like its exalted version.
• A juxtaposed placement holds both at once. Ra Uru Hu described this as an opportunity rather than a problem: the whole of the line is on display, and the task is to let it be rather than to resolve it one way or the other.
• Everything else is unfixed, and free. That is most of your chart. The absence of a mark is not a gap in your design; it is the ordinary state of a line.

Keep the proportion right. Fixing is a refinement of a refinement. Read it after you know your type, strategy, authority and profile, and let it colour how you understand a few of your activations rather than reorganising your life around a ▼.

Not the Juxtaposition Cross#

The word juxtaposition does double duty in Human Design, and the two uses are unrelated. The Juxtaposition Cross is one of the three cross angles, the fixed-fate geometry that belongs to the 4/1 profile. A juxtaposed fixing is a statement about one planet in one line. A 4/1 need not have a single juxtaposed activation, and anyone of any profile can have one.
