How Two Human Design Charts Combine

When two people come together, their charts don't just sit side by side — they merge into a third thing. Overlay both bodygraphs and you get a connection chart (often called the composite): the relationship's own design, with its own defined centers, its own type, and its own authority. It's the most concrete way Human Design talks about relationships, and the core idea is refreshingly mechanical: chemistry has a wiring diagram.

The overlay: combining every activation#

Each chart is a set of activations — every gate switched on by your Personality (conscious) and Design (unconscious) planets. To build the connection chart, you simply take the union of both people's activations: every gate either person carries is now "on" in the composite.

From there, the normal rules of the bodygraph apply, just to the combined set:

• A channel completes whenever both of its two gates are present — even if the two halves come from different people.
• A center defines whenever a completed channel runs into it.
• The composite then has its own type, authority, and definition, read exactly as you'd read an individual chart.

The result is what's in the room when the two of you are together — a distinct energetic entity that behaves differently from either of you alone.

Channels that complete across two people#

This is where relationships get their spark. Look at the hero below: Ava carries gate 5, Ben carries gate 15. On their own, each holds only one end of a channel — a hanging gate that never quite resolves. Put them together and the 5-15 channel of Rhythm completes, defining the Sacral and G center as one connected stream.

A channel that neither person had alone but that they complete together is an electromagnetic connection — the magnetic, "can't stop thinking about you and don't know why" pull. It's genuinely new energy, alive and attractive, but because it only exists together, it's also where people can lose themselves or grow dependent. Pull isn't proof of correctness.

When an open center becomes defined together#

The most consequential thing the overlay can do is define a center that's open in both of you.

A defined center is consistent — it runs the same way all the time. An open center is where you're receptive, variable, and easily conditioned by whoever you're with. So when a channel completes across the two of you and lights up a center that each of you leaves open individually, something real shifts:

• In that area, the pair suddenly has steady, reliable definition — but only while you're together.
• You may feel noticeably more settled, clear, or "yourself" around this person, precisely because a usually-open part of you is now consistent.
• That pull can be magnetic enough to override your own Authority — which is exactly why the chart shows you where the conditioning sits, not whether to act on it.

The flip side is just as worth naming. A center that's defined in only one of you means that person consistently conditions the other in that theme — steady for the definer, sometimes overshadowing (and always a place to learn) for the open one.

How many centers end up defined in the composite is itself meaningful — it sets the relationship's overall rhythm, from tightly bonded to wide-open and exploratory. That's the connection theme, counted across all nine centers.

Reading it as mechanics, not destiny#

A connection chart shows where ease and friction naturally sit — never whether two people should be together. Every combination works when each person honors their own Strategy and Authority; openness between you is where you explore and learn together, not a flaw. The chart is a map of the dynamic, not a verdict on it.
